Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) is an orally administered hormonal therapy that acts as an anti-estrogen, blocking the growth stimulating effects of the female hormone (estrogen) on breast cancer cells. It has been available now for over 20 years and found to be particularly useful as:

Patients with advanced breast cancer may take Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) for varying periods of time depending on response and other factors. However, Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) now is generally prescribed only for 5 years when used as adjuvant therapy for early stage breast cancer. As a treatment to reduce the chance of developing cancer in women at high risk, Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) may be used for longer periods of time.

Young women at high risk are most likely to benefit from Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) because their breast cancer risk substantially outweighs the potential for adverse effects. Also, women of any age without a uterus, who therefore arc not at risk of endometrial cancer, may benefit accordingly. However, the question remained whether or not women with breast cancer needed to undergo the burden of both therapies and their side effects/complications. Results of a study in 1,000 women recently were presented at the 2000 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and answered the question rather clearly — that combination therapy remains the standard of care for most patients and Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) cannot replace radiotherapy. Study results showed that after surgery and 5 years of treatment, the recurrence rate — or the proportion of women who had their cancer return in the same breast was 10.7% in the Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) alone group, 4,8% in the radiotherapy alone group, and 2% in the combined (radiation plus Nolvadex (Tamoxifen)) group. These results were interpreted to mean that standard care remains unchanged even for these very small, favorable tumors-one centimeter or smaller in size. This study also confirmed that Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) also reduces the occurrence of contra lateral breast cancer — the same disease in the other breast. The incidence of contra lateral breast cancer was found to be 0.6% in the group given Nolvadex (Tamoxifen) and 3% in the others.
